Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis Lacey, a young Irish woman from a small town in County Wexford.
With few opportunities at home, she emigrates to Brooklyn, New York, leaving behind her mother and sister in search of a better life.

At first, Eilis struggles with homesickness, loneliness, and the daunting pace of American city life. She works in a department store by day and studies bookkeeping at night, slowly finding her footing. Her life changes when she meets Tony Fiorello, a kind Italian-American plumber who dreams of building homes for his family. Their romance blossoms, giving Eilis a sense of belonging and love in her new world.

However, when a family tragedy calls her back to Ireland, Eilis finds herself torn between two countries and two lives — her promising future in Brooklyn with Tony, and the comforting familiarity of her Irish roots, where another suitor and her old community await.
